Every day people communicate with each other in many different ways. They talk to each other, write letters or notes or speak on the phone. Without words, communication would be very difficult, but speaking and writing aren’t the only ways people exchange information. Hand signals, body position and facial expression all communicate information about what a person is thinking or feeling. These non-verbal ways of communication play an important part in the way we see people and in the way people see us. Sometimes they can be more important than words.
Take the simple facial expression of smiling. Smiling is the only facial expression that is understood instantly all over the world. It is the only one that is contagious, that is, if one person starts smiling, then the people he or she meets usually start smiling too. Smiling is also the expression most easily recognized – we can see a smile on someone’s face at a distance of 45 meters but we need to be much closer to see other expression. Doctors have shown that smiling is good for people health because it reduces the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and help people to relax. Research in USA has shown that smiling and laughing can help people recover faster from operations. Other studies have shown that people who smile a lot are more popular and have more friends than people who do not.
